Data spaghetti is everywhere

Businesses today have access to more information than ever before on our people, our finances, and our clients. There’s a software tool for recording just about everything.

However, then you end up with multiple pots of information, held in different places. Some of it overlaps, some of it doesn’t, and to make sense of it all you want to bring it together.

Do you have 3mins to share your experience of data spaghetti?

What is data spaghetti?

Let’s say you want to know something simple, like which of your team members are your highest performers, which of those have recently had a pay rise, and how much it was for.

That question can probably not be answered from a single information source – unless you already know and have it in your head.

Maybe you’d export everything to a CSV file and build a behemoth of a spreadsheet that needs manual manipulation and constant updating. Maybe you’d think of buying a dashboard app in an attempt to collate everything in one place so you can answer these questions more easily. Maybe you wouldn’t even know where to start.

However you’d approach it, we can probably agree that getting that information together is a pain in the butt.

Untangling the mess

One of our customers told us that she used to have to give up one Sunday a month to gather data together for her regular management team meeting. That’s the scale of the problem – it’s creeping into your evenings and weekends.

Should it be down to the individual to try and untangle their data spaghetti? We don’t think so, and in fact we’re not alone in that. Many of the software platforms you use (like bob!) are trying to help with this problem, by creating integrations and simple ways to export and import data from one place to another.

How do you want your tools to talk to each other?

Not all spaghetti is bad

I’m a big fan of the edible type of spaghetti, as is YouTube sensation, Tiny Hamster. Watch the video below to take your mind off your data spaghetti woes – just for a minute at least.
